October 16 (Fri) Dissatisfied with Unwin's terms for NN, JC surveys alternative publishers. Having now returned to NN, plans to submit it to Henley for the New Review. 27 Sends a copy of OI to Henry James. 30 EG arranges for JC to meet representatives from Longman and Heinemann (as well as Lucas) at a business dinner, probably to settle on publication rights for NN. There now begins a period when JC, guided by EG, is ~ectly involved in the London literary market-place. P. Watt, the literary agent, though nothing comes of this meeting.

In the first half of August JC leaves for the Ukraine to visit his uncle, nearly losing the eight completed chapters of AF in Berlin. Fortunately both JC and manuscript arrive safely for a stay lasting until the end of September. Back in London and out of work, JC can often be found at the London Shipmasters' Society office among the company gathered around Captain Froud, though he complains of 'disheartening indolence' (to MP, 5 Nov). According to one account by JC's future wife Jessie, she and JC first meet in late 1893 (introduced by Hope) and after a year's break begin to see each other again in 1894.
